Welcome to the St. Mary Magdalene pro-chapter of Lay Dominicans, meeting in Raleigh, NC USA.
Our group meets on the second Saturday of each month for three hours at the Priory of St. Martin de Porres in Raleigh. We have been meeting since 2002. Our meetings are open to anyone interested in discovering more about Dominican Spirituality, especially as it relates to the Word of God.
The first half of the meeting is devoted to the Sacred Scripture for the upcoming Sunday, usually the gospel, but on occasion we will focus on one of the other readings. After a short break for refreshments and socializing we reconvene to study a specific topic, hear from one of the friars, or conduct business. Those who can remain celebrate evening prayer with the friars.
Our scripture study includes a substantial amount of time in silence before the Word. Members take turns preparing and preaching on the Word or leading the group “circle preaching”. Circle preaching is a group reflection on Scripture, taught by Jude Siciliano, that is particularly well suited to lay preaching. Many group members have attended workshops on preaching led by Fr. Brian Pierce, OP or Fr. Jude Siciliano, OP.
During our study time we have studied the Beatitudes, the Rule, Dominican Saints, and Dominican Spirituality.
